One of the major concerns with children is the early detection and treatment of amblyopia. Amblyopia is poor vision in one eye because of lack of neuro-visual development in the brain. This can be caused by an unequal focus between eyes – usually one eye is more farsighted than the other, by a misalignment of the eyes that prevents both eyes from pointing exactly in the same direction, or by a pathological condition that is preventing one eye from seeing clearly. If caught at an early age, this condition can be treated and normal vision can often be restored. Ideally, all infants should have an eye and vision evaluation at 6-12 months of age. Dr. Sturgis is an InfantSee provider. This public service program provides free InfantSee assessments that evaluate the refractive, binocular and health status of infants. Children should have their next complete examination at ages 3-4 and if there are no concerns, at ages 5-6 and then annually.

Beginning January 2014 under the Affordable Care Act, children up to age 19 are eligible for free annual eye examinations and glasses, if needed. Dr. Sturgis and Dr. Motto provide complete eye examinations for children and we offer children’s eyeglasses for all age groups.
